Knocks, kudos as 2Face auctions wedding outfits...
That newly-wed African super star and
multiple award winning entertainer, 2face Idibia, has decided to auction
his customised traditional wedding outfits for charity is no longer
news. What is news, however, is the hot debate his action is generating
on social media networks.
While some describe his action, aimed at
raising money for orphans and the less privileged children in Lagos as
unAfrican, others advised the star entertainer to rather auction all the
gifts he received during his wedding if he truly loves the orphans.
However, some others still believe that his action is well thought out.
Some even urge him to stop the initiative as some of his haters could
use it for diabolical purposes.
2Face, obviously taking a cue from
celebrities in the West had decided to auction his customised
traditional wedding outfits which included hand-beaded shoes which is of
size 44 and cap for charity.
The outfits are being auctioned on an online shopping store, www.kaymu.com.ng.
According to the information on the
online store, 2Face donated his coffee colour hand-beaded traditional
shoe, and suede with the inscription, “2Baba” to help raise money for
orphans in Lagos.
“For the Lagos State Motherless Babies’
Home, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, there are two maintenance projects that
require funding to make the homes of the children safer and conducive.
“To help raise the needed funds for this
maintenance projects, 2Face Idibia has donated his native branded shoe
and cap that he wore for his traditional wedding with his African queen
and longtime sweetheart, Annie Macaulay, on March 8, 2013 in Uyo to be
auctioned,” the information on the product description states.
However, 2Face’s “charity initiative” has received both cheers and jeers from Nigerians on social media.
A section of commenters on various
social networks say the idea of donating one’s personal effects was
alien to the Nigerian culture. They warned 2Face against auctioning them
as the items could be used for fetish purposes.
One of such fans was Syhla, a reader on lindaikeji.blogspot.com. He specifically asked 2Face to withdraw the items from the auction and donate cash instead.
“Go back and withdraw your cap and shoes. Replace them with cash. Hehehe. I laff oh. That your cap fit enter wrong hands, tubaba. I like you, na im make me de talk,” Shyla advises.
Another anonymous reader on lindaikeji.blogspot.com states,
“My darling 2Face, I know this was not your idea. Some people want to
spoil your reputation. Please, collect your shoe, and cap before they
carry it to babalawo shrine. Give money or don’t worry yourself. I still love you.”
Many challenged 2Face to auction the expensive gifts he was presented on his wedding day. A member of the popular online forum, nairaland.com states,
“2face should also auction that Prado SUV given to him by Akwa Ibom
State Governor, Godswill Akpabio. At least, it’s from taxpayers’ money.”
An obviously angry reader on lindaikeji.blogspot.com says, “2baba after we bought your CDs and made you rich, you went to Dubai to wed so that we will not eat your rice for once.
“Today again, you want to raise money
through us, please go back to Dubai and get those who ate your rice to
not only buy your shoe and cap but your songs too. Again, if you want
to help those children, start with the jeeps you got as wedding gifts.”
Purest Boy, who also seems enraged with
2Face states, “He (2Face) should go back to Dubai where he had his
wedding to auction them.”
Another league of commenters believes
that acquiring any of 2face’s personal effect was tantamount to suddenly
becoming hyper-active sexually.
A member of nairaland.com, Yomi
asks, “Will buying them make me a celebrity? I don’t want them before
it will give me 2face anointing to impregnate every woman.” While Zyzzx
also notes, “I think the outfits should be donated to fertility clinics,
might help some women become pregnant.”
Some were of the opinion that Nigeria
has yet to reach the stage where they adore stars and invest in huge
sums on celebrity paraphernalia. Thus the school of thought expressed
pessimism that the auction would not achieve its primary objective.
“2Face thinks he is now in Europe or
America. Wow!, what’s gotten into him that he forgot he is a Nigerian in
naija. Come, my brother, we love you and your music but we will never
be as fanatical as to now bid for your “2 Baba” costumes.
“Haba, you just fall enter Nigeria?
Nigerians no dey kolo for celebrity o, dem no send at all. Oyibo
mentality never catch naija yet. Open art gallery for your costume and
donate money instead for charity. You spent so much for your wedding now
you want to sell used clothes for charity. Haba,” Dbride explains on
nairaland.com.
On the same forum, Jalto notes, “I don’t
think he(2Face) can raise any reasonable fund from the auction. This
is naija, no one send you ooo.”
But 2Face’s loyal fans argue on the
social networks that his initiative was for a good cause and Nigerians
should appreciate him for it.
“Guys, stop behaving like illiterates;
2Baba is a celebrity and anything of his is worth a lot. It’s not
necessary you use it. It’s just the spirit of giving that is important,
would you rather buy Beyonce’s costume? Let’s learn to appreciate our
own! It’s all for a good cause! 2Baba well-done,” a fan, Mama Meta
states.
As at 12 noon on Sunday, the cap had
only received a single bid which is in the sum of N999 from Oshine,
while the suede shoes had received two bids as at 12 PM on Sunday.
Topgee992 is the highest bidder who has
placed a sum of N5,050 on the shoes while Manusingh525 placed a price
tag of N4,999 on it.
According to the online store, the
auction, is expected to end in 27 days time while the delivery will cost
N1,000 for Lagos residents and N3000 for Abuja and Port-Harcourt
residents.
